Brief and to the point ... Why is the 42 Cdo flag (red/white cross on yellow background) so different to all the other units flags (3 columns with corps crest and commando daggers) ie 40 cdo and 45 Cdo ? This flag is based on a Lt-Col's colour in the Lord High Admiral's Regiment of 1664-89. It was adopted by 1st Battalion RM as their unit flag in WWII; 1st Battalion was designated 42 Commando in August 1945. Thanks to Jim Robinson The Flag is of a red St. George's cross on a white cross over a yellow background, with a white number "42" dissected by an inverted dagger in the centre. This is based on the Lt Colonel's Colour of The Lord High Admiral's Regiment 1664-1689. This was adopted by the 1st RM Battalion as their unit flag in World War 2. At the end of July 1943 the 1st Battalion was reformed as 42 RM Commando.
